COMPLETE PLANET VIEWING GUIDE 2025
MERCURY - The Elusive One
Best Viewing - March/April and September/October evenings. Look just after sunset, low on horizon.
Challenge Level - Hard! Only visible briefly at twilight. Never far from Sun.
VENUS - The Brilliant One
2025 Visibility - Evening star through spring. Morning star fall/winter. BRIGHTEST object after Sun/Moon!
Tip - If you see a bright "star" at dusk or dawn, it's probably Venus. Can cast shadows on dark nights!
MARS - The Red Planet
2025 Opposition - January 2025! Mars closest to Earth. Brightest and biggest all year. Don't miss it!
Best Viewing - Visible all night during opposition. Look for distinct red/orange color.
JUPITER - The Giant
2025 Opposition - December 2025. Second brightest planet. Creamy white color.
With Binoculars - Can see 4 Galilean moons! They change position nightly.
With Telescope - Cloud bands visible. Great Red Spot with patience.
SATURN - The Ringed Wonder
2025 Opposition - September 2025. Golden color. Slightly dimmer than Jupiter.
The Rings - Even small telescope shows rings! 2025 rings are tilting edge-on (disappearing by 2025!).
URANUS & NEPTUNE
Uranus - Barely visible to naked eye in very dark skies. Blue-green color in telescope.
Neptune - Requires telescope. Blue color. Use star chart to locate.
PLANET-SPOTTING TIPS
- Planets don't twinkle like stars - they shine steadily
- They're always found along the ecliptic (Sun's path)
- Use apps like Stellarium, SkySafari, or Star Walk
- Best viewing: when planet is highest in sky (at opposition)
- Binoculars help a lot! Telescope even better.
